Wah Kwong 60th Anniversary

The autumn of 2012 saw Wah Kwong celebrate the sixtieth anniversary since the company was founded by T.Y.Chao. The company marked the event with the publication of the book ‘A Tale of Two Ventures’. The 400 page volume, which has been widely acclaimed in the shipping press, is much more than just a history of the company, being a contemporary photographic essay of the ‘shipping chain’, graphically depicting the role that shipping plays in the modern world.

Wah Kwong hired well known Hong Kong based photographer Basil Pao to shoot the stunning images and over a period of two years he recorded how iron ore is mined, transported to a port to be loaded onto the bulkcarrier ‘AQUA VENTURE’, transported to China and made into steel which was subsequently used to build the VLCC ‘DALIAN VENTURE’ – hence the title ‘A TALE OF TWO VENTURES’. The book has been distributed to clients and friends of the company and is also being sent to schools throughout Hong Kong as part of Wah Kwong’s commitment to promote the shipping industry to the next generation.

The book was launched at a spectacular anniversary party held at the new Hong Kong Maritime Museum in Central, adjacent to the famous Star Ferry pier. Over 250 guests from around the world joined the Chao family in celebrating Wah Kwong’s sixty years as part of the Hong Kong shipping community and got the chance to view a spectacular exhibition of Basil Pao’s photographs in the main gallery of the new museum.
